Enter your Queensland subject results and this calculator scales them the way QTAC does, takes your best five, and shows you exactly which subjects counted. Most QLD calculators hand you a crowdsourced number. This one shows the working and is honest about which part is exact and which is estimated.
Unofficial estimate. This site is not affiliated with QTAC or the QCAA, and the number below is not your ATAR — only QTAC can issue that.
Scaling data year: 2025 — QTAC publishes each year’s scaling in its ATAR Report around February, and this page loads it by year. Last reviewed: October 2026.
For a General subject, pick it from the list and enter your subject result out of 100 — we scale it for you. For an Applied subject or VET qualification, choose that type and enter your scaled score (0–100).

How the QCE ATAR actually works
Your ATAR in Queensland is not an average of your marks. QTAC scales each General subject result so a result in one subject can be compared fairly with a result in another, then adds your best five scaled results into an aggregate. That aggregate decides your ATAR (QTAC).
- Best five — only your five strongest scaled results count, with at most one Applied subject and one VET qualification among them.
- English to qualify — you must complete an English subject at grade C or higher to be eligible, but it only adds to your aggregate if it is one of your best five.
- Scaling, not raw marks — a result of 80 in a strongly scaling subject is worth more than 80 in a weakly scaling one. The scaling table further down shows how each subject moved in 2025.
Why this gives an estimate, not an official ATAR
There is one honest gap in every Queensland ATAR calculator, including this one. QTAC publishes how subjects are scaled, but not the final table that converts a scaled aggregate into an ATAR. That single missing step is why the main competitor crowdsources its numbers.
- Exact — your best-five scaled aggregate, and which subjects counted. The working table in the result shows every step.
- Modelled — the ATAR itself, derived from QTAC's published subject distributions and shown as a range of about plus or minus 5, never as a single official figure.
The plan for results season is to validate this model against real student results as they come in, and show the agreement openly — model-driven, with crowdsourced validation. That is the one thing no competitor currently offers.
Two numbers worth knowing
- The ATAR is reported from 99.95 down to 30.00 in steps of 0.05. Anything below 30 is shown as "30.00 or less" rather than a precise number.
- ATAR bands each hold about 1 in 2000 of the Queensland Year 12 cohort, which is why small differences in strong subjects can move your rank near the top.

How a scaled aggregate maps to an ATAR
Reference points on the modelled curve this calculator uses. QTAC does not publish an official version of this table, so treat every ATAR here as an estimate.
| Best-5 aggregate (/500) | Modelled ATAR | Roughly where that sits |
|---|---|---|
| 305 | ~50 | around the 25th percentile of ATAR-eligible students |
| 373 | ~71 | a typical median result |
| 418 | ~85 | around the top 25 per cent |
| 440 | ~94 | around the top 10 per cent |
| 455 | ~99 | around the top 1 per cent |
| 475 | ~99.95 | the maximum ATAR |
Questions Queensland students actually ask
How is the ATAR calculated in Queensland?
Queensland (QTAC) scales each of your General subject results so they can be compared on one ladder, then adds your best five scaled results into an aggregate. That aggregate is what determines your ATAR. English must be completed at a C or higher to qualify, but only counts if it is one of your best five.
Which five subjects count?
Your best five scaled results count, with at most one Applied subject and at most one completed VET qualification among them. A valid pattern is five General subjects, or four General plus one Applied, or four General plus a VET qualification at Certificate III or above. Taking more subjects can only help or do nothing.
Do I need English to get an ATAR in QLD?
You need a completed English subject at grade C or higher to be eligible for an ATAR, but it only contributes to your aggregate if it lands in your best five. Any of the English subjects satisfies the requirement.
Do VET and Applied subjects count toward my ATAR?
Yes, within limits. At most one Applied subject and one VET qualification can sit in your best five. VET is pass or fail with no grade, and is scaled at its AQF level, so every completed qualification at the same level receives the same scaled score that year.
Why does this give an estimate rather than my exact ATAR?
QTAC publishes how each subject is scaled but not the table that turns a scaled aggregate into an ATAR. Your aggregate and the five subjects that counted are exact. The ATAR number is modelled from QTAC's published subject distributions, which is why it is shown as a range rather than a single official figure.
Does this subject scale up or scale down in QLD?
Compare the subject's scaled median to its raw median in the scaling table on this page. If the scaled median is higher than the raw median, the subject scaled up that year; if it is lower, it scaled down. Specialist Mathematics and the sciences tend to scale up; some arts subjects scale down.
What is a good ATAR in Queensland?
It depends on the course. Many Queensland degrees sit in the 70 to 90 range, while Medicine and Law at the sandstone universities ask for 98 or above. An ATAR of 90 means you finished roughly in the top 10 per cent of the age cohort.
I used to hear about the OP, not the ATAR. What changed?
Queensland replaced the OP (Overall Position, a 1 to 25 band) with the ATAR for students finishing from 2020 onward. The ATAR is a finer, nationally comparable rank from 0 to 99.95, so an old OP does not map cleanly to a modern ATAR.
Where these rules come from
The best-five rule, the Applied and VET limits, the English requirement and the 99.95-to-30.00 reporting range are all taken from QTAC's own ATAR documentation. The subject scaling figures are from the QTAC ATAR Report 2025, Table 6. The aggregate-to-ATAR step is modelled, because QTAC does not publish it, and the page says so rather than presenting a crowdsourced guess as fact.

Disclaimer
This calculator is an unofficial estimate provided for general information only. It is not your ATAR. Only QTAC can calculate and issue an ATAR, and the figure it issues is the only one universities will accept.
- This site is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to QTAC, the QCAA, or any university or admission centre.
- The scaled aggregate is exact given your inputs; the ATAR figure is modelled from published scaling data, because QTAC does not publish an aggregate-to-ATAR table.
- Scaling changes every year. A result produced before the current year's data is published can differ from your final ATAR.
- Your selection rank may differ from your ATAR once universities apply adjustment factors, and some courses have prerequisites that no rank can substitute for.
